If you answer yes to any of the statements below this announcement is going to be right up your alley.
2014 is upon us men. Now if you’re anything like me you’ve got a few New Year Resolutions in mind that you’re mapping out your plan of attack for.
Personally I’ve been working on increasing my one rep max in the bench press since the time I was 16-years old. As a former football player I got tested in the bench press and it has always been a favorite of mine.
Last year I tweaked my shoulder and had to take a break from max effort benching for a bit. I’m better now (thanks for asking), but I want to try a different kind of bench press challenge. Instead of working on my one rep max all year round I want to test my merit in a Bench for Reps challenge.
The most popular Reps Test you’ve probably heard of is the NFL Combine 225 LB Bench for Reps Test.
Some of the other events from the combine include the 40-yard dash, Vertical Jump, Broad Jump, 3-Cone Drill, 20 Yard Shuttle and the 60 Yard Shuttle. Now here’s something I find really interesting…
Out of all the lifts they could have picked, the NFL that is worth millions upon millions of dollars decided that this one bench press test is a safe and easy gauge from year to year in terms of Overall Strength Endurance which is an imperative factor for winning football games (and just being an all around bad-ass).
Maybe you didn’t get to compete at the combine because you had an injury like I did having torn my ACL. Or maybe you’re just curious how you’d stack up. Below are some baseline numbers you can use to see what is expected of NFL players.
Right now I happen to weight 225 lbs. So if I were to see how many times I could bench press my bodyweight, I’d be doing the same 225 LB Rep test that NFL hope-fulls perform at the combine.
That’s why strength coach Chandler Marchman, CSCS and I created this Bodyweight Bench for Reps Challenge. It uses the same training principles you’d use to prepare for the 225-Rep Test but you can make it a personal goal to see how many times you can bench press your own body weight.
Oh I didn’t tell you about Chandler yet? He is a beast. He lives near me here in Tampa Bay, Fl and owns a gym called Elite Strength & Conditioning. Plus he has competed in strongman and walks around with Abs weighing 215 lbs all year long. His gym is a breeding ground for elite athletes and he’s one of the most proficient bench pressers I’ve ever come across.
My specialty has been in 1-Rep Max strength over the years so I was super excited to partner up with Chandler on this program design.
When we teach the bench press,we always have to drive home the point that you MUST be the model of efficiency in order to perform to the apex of your natural abilities.
We can’t tell you how many times that with only 5-10 minutes of coaching we have helped add 20-35 lbs to a client’s bench press simply by correcting form.
How? It’s simple really, if you aren’t engaging the right muscles for the bench press, you will not be able to apply the maximum force. Inefficient movements will result in a less than stellar performance and that’s NOT only for a 1 Rep Max! Over the course of an entire set, you could be losing 3-5 reps just from not knowing proper form or test taking protocol…
Solution: The Bench for Reps Program gives you immediate access to online tutorial videos perfecting your technique.
Whether you admit it or not, the ability to bench press your bodyweight a number of times IS indicative on how strong you are. If you haven’t made maximal strength a priority, then you’re missing out on valuable reps.
Why? Think energy conservation and efficiency again. Say there are two guys, both weight 200 lbs. One can bench press 315 lbs, whereas the other one can only press 225 lbs.
Logically, who do you think is gonna have an easier time pressing 200 lbs for reps? If you haven’t prioritized maximal strength in the bench press, then you’re missing the boat!
Solution: One of your four workouts per week is a max effort session where you will be performing sets of 2 reps or 3 reps.
On the flip side, if you lack muscular endurance, especially in the muscles activated in the bench press (chest, shoulders, triceps, and upper back), then you will peter out – regardless of how strong you are! Simply put, you must match maximal strength with muscular endurance if you wish to crush this test.
Solution: During the Bench for Reps program you’ll have a rep-day where you bang out lots of repetitions.
We mentioned before, in order to be effective in the 225 lbs rep test or any bench press rep challenge we must patch up any “leaks”or structural integrity issues.
That means we must identify key deficiencies and address them with the RIGHT exercises. If you aren’t addressing your weaknesses with the proper weak point training exercises, don’t expect to see any marked improvement when you test yourself!
Solution: Your Bench for Reps programs incorporates assistance exercises, plus there’s a lower body day where you perform other big compound movements that release muscle building hormones like testosterone and growth hormone.
We know what you’re thinking. How could anyone “screw the pooch” on this one? You just grab the bar and bench it as many times as you can…until you can’t! Right?
If you think that’s all there is to it, you couldn’t be further from the truth OR further from increasing your reps.
Solution: This won’t be a problem for you. We teach how to utilize rhythm reps and stroke reps for maximum results. And we made you a video that shows you exactly how to ace the test and what to avoid.
