Remembering The Guru:
Vince Gironda The Greatest Trainer That Ever Lived
Guest Post By Ron Kosloff N/C of NSP Research Nutrition
Vince Gironda Part 2:
(Last Week, Vince’s friend Ron Kosloff revealed never-before told anecdotal tales of the muscle maestro. This month, he adds more unpublished gems to complete his one of a kind necklace of Gironda memories.)
Early on in my association with this young fellow I’m training, he observed that we weren’t doing much. You never want to work a muscle more than twice in one week, and when you work it, you work it with intensity. You never rest for more than 15 or 20 seconds between sets. When you work with intensity you’ll be surprised how fast you get the pump, which is what you’re looking for. Remember, when you’re trying to gain, you never work your stomach because the stress attacks and shocks the nerves in your solar plexus and then your hormone levels go down.
This is the routine I had him on to start. You work your biceps, triceps, delts, chest and back on Monday. You work your forearms, thighs, leg biceps and calves on Tuesday. If you want to work your inner thighs on Tuesday also, that’s okay. Repeat Monday’s workout on Thursday and Tuesday’s workout on Friday. Then you have to rest because this is when HGH is released by your pituitary and you’ll gain muscular size.
I said, “I’m going to show you how not to work out.
I’m not criticizing anybody, but this is how most people train.” I pointed to a fellow in the gym, a local bodybuilding hero who’d won a few contests and was a steroid user. “He’s probably here six days per week,” I explained, “but when he comes in he doesn’t do very much. He thinks that just being in the gym and taking steroids is going to increase his physique, which will probably happen with the steroids.” I told the kid to watch this guy.
He was doing the bench press for his chest, but the bench press is not a chest exercise. The neck press is, as Vince taught. He grunted and groaned and grunted and groaned, did about 7 or 8 reps, and then sat there for ten minutes looking at himself in the mirror. Then he got up and went for a drink of water. A few minutes later he came back and did another set. He grunted and groaned some more and then went into the next room and b.s’d with some guys for 10 or 15 minutes before doing another set. When he’d finished his chest, he did his delts the same way. He read the bulletin board, did about 4 sets, and left. Most guys spend hours at the gym and tell their girlfriends about their long, hard workouts. Well, this guy did practically nothing. He spent more time reading the bulletin board, drinking the water, and looking at himself in the mirror than he did working out. There was nothing intense to his workout.
Another question the kid asked me was, “What about personal trainers? How come you’re a personal trainer and (pointing to another fellow in the gym who was doing personal training) he’s certified?” So I said, “Certified by whom? I know that guy’s methods. He’ll tell you to eat gobs and gobs of complex carbohydrates. Look at the people he trains. Are they making any progress? No. You’re going to get into this gym four times a week and you’re going to work out Monday a half hour, Tuesday a half hour, Thursday a half hour, Friday a half hour, and then you’re going to go home. These people spend two and three hours a day in a gym and their personal trainer kills them. Why? Because otherwise they don’t feel like they have got their money’s worth. They don’t understand the overload principle.”
German scientists proved – and this was documented –
…that the only way you can increase the size of the muscle is by what they call the German overload principle: The greatest amount of work in the least amount of time. How much work you do doesn’t matter. How fast you do it is what counts. That’s why sprinters have far, far superior physiques to long distance runners, who overtrain. The principle was proven conclusively a hundred years ago by German scientist, and that’s the method Vince adapted. That’s why his students always looked a thousand times better than anyone else. The guy was just so brilliant it was almost mind-boggling. The scientific principles and ideas he would use to create a physique were just amazing. These people don’t understand that. They don’t understand nutrition. They don’t understand that the word protein means most important.
I showed the kid what this personal trainer was doing wrong. He was telling people to grab the weight with their thumbs around the bar. You almost never put your thumb around the bar – only in a few exercises. In any exercise you will inadvertently use your forearm to help lift the weight. If you put your thumb under the bar, it’s called a palm grip. Some call it a false grip. He had these people doing sit ups and leg raises. They were trying to gain size but not getting anywhere because, as Vince explained, of the shock to the solar plexus. He was having them do bench press for chest, but the bench press is not a chest exercise. It’s mostly an exercise for the front delts. When you bring the bar down to the lower pec line, you’re working your delts. If you arch your back to hoist the weight up, you’re using the teres major. If you put your thumb around the bar, you’re using your triceps and forearms. You’re working everything but your chest.
Vince preached isolation exercises. He really scoffed at personal trainers because they didn’t know much. Somebody just made five hundred dollars to give them a phony certification, and they still didn’t know what they were doing. They don’t know much about kinesiology. They don’t know much about how a muscle works, and if you don’t know how a muscle works, how can you work a muscle? Like Vince, I teach nutrition first and then exercise. I don’t just teach exercise and ignore nutrition because bodybuilding is 85% nutrition.
Some people look but they never really see. Some people listen but they never really hear. Those are just some of the lessons of life, and most people never learn life’s lessons. Unfortunately, big advertising and marketing are America. Doesn’t make any difference what you have as long as you market it correctly. I’ve often said that if somebody produced rabbit pellets and told bodybuilders they were good for you, bodybuilders would be eating rabbit pellets without question.
Vince said once that the average intelligence in your average gym ape wasn’t much higher than your average pair of socks!
Vince Gironda didn’t really get along with Joe Weider. They were adversaries and their training philosophies were totally different. There was no comparison between Vince’s method and the Weider method, but Weider didn’t care. To him Vince was just a gym owner and seller of his nutritional supplements and courses. It’s a sad, sad fact that when Vince Died, Madeline, his wife, told me that he was overdrawn about $160 dollars on his bank account. Vince pretty much died a pauper. I’m very much saddened by that fact. After Vince died, Weider had the very, very commendable decency to write a little section in his magazine concerning him. Basically, it said, “We are sad to see that Vince Gironda recently passed away.” Then he gave Vince a lot of credit when he stated, in very small print, “Clearly this man was way, way, way ahead of his time.” And he certainly was. Thank you Joe.
Vince knew the lessons of life, such as you should never be concerned whether people like you or not, but whether they respect you. The liking will come after they respect you. He scared many so-called authorities with his revolutionary ideas and theories. This is why they attacked him routinely. For example, he always used the word, ‘overtonus’ in referring to loss of muscle tissue from over training. He had read this in a medical journal, but his critics constantly attacked his use of this word, saying they’d never heard of it. Vince called his findings facts, but Gene Mozee and John Balik said that statement was extreme. However, I never knew his methods to fail. To me they were facts!
This student of mine asked me about supplements and Muscle Media and MET-Rx and EAS and Bill Phillip, and of course, I had to answer him honestly. At first, I didn’t intend to mention Bill Phillips and Muscle Media because they don’t have much to do with Vince, but I’ve been sort of prodded into doing it because of a rather degrading remark Phillips made about him. A customer of mine related it to me two or three y ears ago, and it mad me angry and upset, so I think I’ll discuss it if you don’t mind.
I feel as if Phillips is the new Joe Weider. That’s just my gut feeling. His Muscle Media is just a catalog marketing his own supplements…
….which is his right, of course, but I feel he slammed Vince and made him look very foolish. My customer told me he was at a seminar or bodybuilding contest somewhere where Phillips was talking to a group of people. Someone asked him about liver tablets, milk and egg protein, and Vince Gironda, and he said, very directly, that was “old-time” bodybuilding. That was passé. He implied that Vince didn’t know what he was talking about.
Let me explain a bit of philosophy. There was once a man named Martin Boorman who was a minister of propaganda in Hitler’s regime. Boorman knew that if you control what people see, what they hear, and what they read, you literally control them. The church in the Middle Ages called it “propogate.” That’s where the term propaganda comes from. The Orientals call it mind conditioning or brainwashing. Today we call it marketing. If you get all your information from the media, you’re brainwashed.
Remember the egg scare? The media told people that eggs cause heart attacks, and everyone believed it. Whenever I do a consultation or seminar, I tell people I wish there were zippers on their heads so that I could unzip hem and take out all the garbage the media has put in.
The media can control our thinking. This is exactly what Mr. Phillips is doing. He’s done some very, very slick marketing that I’m just awed by. I mean, this guy has come out with his supplement guide, and amazingly his products always come out on top. Four or five years a go a magazine called Nutrition News called MET-Rx a hoax.
Steve Patton, who works for Universal Nutrition Supplements, is a good friend of mine. Steve and I talk a lot about nutrition and Vince and bodybuilding. In the course of one conversation Dr. Scott Connelly’s name came up. (Connelly supposedly invented MET-Rx). I asked Steve, “Where is the miracle in MET-Rx?” He replied, as I have always said, the miracle is in the marketing. It’s a hell of a marketing plan.
Bodybuilding today is totally controlled by the magazines.
One magazine that seems to be in charge is Muscle Media. A lot of people read it, and they say, “Well, if Bill Phillips says it, it must be true. Bill Phillips says liver tablets are no good.” Let me tell you something about Bill Phillips and liver. He panned liver, said it was not good. It’s old time bodybuilding, he said. He wouldn’t take it because it traps toxins in the body, and that’s got to be terrible.
The liver probably has a thousand functions. It manufactures hormones, it filters, it converts amino acids to protein, it transfers nutrients… I could go on and on. It contains P450, which happens to detoxify drugs and a thousand bad substances in your body. Liver is a unique food, and that’s why Vince turned me onto it. Liver used to be the staple of bodybuilding, and now some guy says its no good and nobody uses it. Liver is a phenomenal food. When an animal can get any food of its choice, organ meat is what it goes for first. It an animal gets an egg, it eats the whole egg. It doesn’t just eat the white and throw the yolk away.
Phillips promotes creatine, and creatine is a great product if you don’t abuse it. But remember, the reason Vince advocated a lot of liver, a lot of glands, and a lot of meat is that they contain creatine. That’s why when you took liver tablets; you got a tremendous amount of energy. Plus the fact that liver contains cytochrome C, which is an iron-bonding amino acid that draws oxygen into the bloodstream. The p450 in the liver is s tremendous antioxidant and detoxifier, probably the most powerful known. Dr. P.H. Ersoff at the University of Michigan proved that in the early 1950′s. See why liver and glands and meat are so important? Because they’re hormone-precursing nutrients. (Just ask the Indians).
Mr. Phillips implies his EAS products are “new-way” bodybuilding. Well, I’ve looked at a lot of his products and some of them are good, but, as Gironda proved, you have to have al least a thousand milligrams of chelated or ionized calcium every day, plus high amounts of macrominerals and trace minerals. Senate bill number 264 in 1936 told the American people that our soil was lacking 22 minerals then. Now 64 years later, the deficiency is over 40 minerals. Some people say 45. That’s why Vince recommended Celtic sea salt and liquid minerals – so that you could get all your minerals. Your minerals and trace minerals are hormone precursors. When you stimulate hormones, you create muscle tissue. B Complex is indispensable. I don’t see any good, solid quantities or high potencies of B complex in any EAS products.
Then there’s the matter of synthetic hormones on the market these days – androstenedione and a couple of others. Vince always said that if you’re very well nourished, you can manufacture your own hormones into your 50′s, 60′s, 70′s 80′s and 90′s. My grandfather, who lived to be almost 98, was sexed into his 80′s! My grandmother, who lived to be 101, had her last baby at 54. They had tremendously high hormone levels because they at all natural foods. Vince was dead set against synthetic hormones of any kind because when bodybuilders take synthetic hormones, their own hormone production ceases. Testicles shrivel up to nothing, and a lot of men have to take synthetic hormones for the rest of their lives. So don’t mess around with andro and all that garbage. Oh sure, it makes everybody a lot of money, but you can do it naturally folks. Vince Gironda always advocated the natural way, not the cheater’s way.
Drug users, as Vince always said, are nothing but cheaters.
In a lot of protein powders that Bill Phillips and the others make, I see 50 or 45 grams of protein, and I think: “Oh my God! You can’t digest all that protein unless you take extra amounts of protylitic enzymes and hydrochloric acid.” If you’re a man, 30 to 35 grams is all you can digest at a meal. For a woman, it’s 25. Undigested protein is converted to sugar. It sounds good, but it’s just a game of one upmanship between companies. One company says, “We have 25 grams of protein.” The next one says, “Well, we have 35.” And so on and so on. It’s just a marketing ploy.
I spoke with Mr. Phillips about eight or nine years ago and asked him why there isn’t any fat in his protein. He replied, “Oh, you can’t have any fat.” See, he was on the anti-fat bandwagon, proving he didn’t know you’ll die without natural fats. Americans have been on a high-carbohydrate, zero-fat diet for the last 40 or 50 years, and we’re getting fatter and sicker. Don’t believe anything but the facts. Americans are the fattest people in the world, and we’re also the sickest people in the world.
Where there’s money there is the pursuit of money, and people will do anything to make it. I’m not much of a Bible-pounder, but in the Bible, Jesus says, “Beware of the person who wears the clock of respectability,” and “The Love of money is the root of all evil.”
Very few people under the age of 50 will ever believe or listen to Vince’s methods simply because of the maturity factor. Young people are easily swayed. I recall three friends I met when I owned the Powerhouse Gym – Tom Patton, who’s won a few titles and is a personal trainer, Dan Martin, who’ s a personal trainer, and Little John Pechinino. They all have excellent physiques. Many years ago, when I first met them, they thought I was a nice guy, but oh those silly methods! That was when they were in their teens and 20′s. I take my hat off to each one of them. They didn’t agree with me, and that was fine, but they never really disagreed. Now, ten years later, Tom uses Vince’s training and nutritional methods exclusively. So do Dan and John. They all ask me, “Ron, why didn’t you make me listen to you 15 years ago?” Well as I said, it’s all education, wisdom and experience.
If the lightbulb of life doesn’t go on by the time someone is 35 years old, it’ll never really go on. He’s going to be wallowing in his ignorance until the day he dies.
I’m currently training a young man named Tony Oglesby at the Powerhouse, and I’m certifying him in Vince’s methods. When Tony first came to me two years ago he was a little bigger, but had absolutely no shape, no definition, no symmetry. He called himself “hardcore,” whatever that means. Now, two years later, Tony’s about 10 or 15 percent smaller, but with phenomenal shape. I wish you could see this kid! He’s never entered a contest, but he will. Right before he does, I’m going to put him on Vince’s Six Week Bulk course, and then after that, his definition course. I haven’t seen the competition yet, but Tony does not take steroids, never did, and won’t. He’s going to blow everybody away. I guarantee that right now. Whenever anyone went to Vince and said he wanted to be Mr. America, Mr. California, Mr. Olympia, or Mr. Whatever, Vince would always reply, as he did to Larry Scott, “You do exactly what I tell you to do, and you will be a title winner.
The only crime Vince Gironda ever committed was being out of style and being 50 years ahead of his time. He stood virtually alone because he didn’t pursue the big bucks and he didn’t choose to lie. This quality, I’m sure you’ll agree, is not only admirable and honest, but also to be respected. The truth is a very powerful weapon. It was one of Vince’s virtues. This weapon, the truth, was really the only weapon he had against the steroid users and the entrepreneurs. I hope you get my point.
He always prodded people to think. I know he made me think. He gave me a compliment one time. He said, “You must have a high IQ because you’re always searching, always prodding, always asking questions.” Vince’s own IQ was near genius level. It’s just too bad that people out there who are making millions of dollars selling B.S. are not that intelligent. The only mental capacity they have is to make money at all costs. I’m going to do my best to make Vince Gironda a symbol of all that is good, decent and honest in bodybuilding. I will do my best not to let his name, his methods and his principles fade away without a fight.
I recently spoke with Vince’s widow, Madelaine, and she has given me the exclusive rights to distribute his courses. In the coming months, I hope you’ll see some ads I the magazines stating that Vince’s courses are available again. My objective is to keep Vince Gironda’s name alive and make sure his knowledge, philosophy and goodwill toward bodybuilding will live on. I hope you’ll understand that I’m doing this because Vince was my teacher and mentor. I truly loved the man! If you read his courses, you’ll understand how brilliant he was. You cannot fail to benefit from them.
If the courses are a success, I’m going to make three videos that will explain Vince’s philosophy, his nutritional principles, and his training methods. Some of the knowledge in these courses will be mine because there was nobody to carry on the torch so I did a lot of experimenting. Vince commented on many, many projects I showed him, like a colon-cleansing kit I developed. Vince always stressed keeping the colon clean. Hippocrates also said that a healthy colon is essential. I’m going to offer to teach anyone who wants to come to Detroit all of Vince’s nutritional principles and certify anyone in his principles and theories. If you see something on the video you don’t understand, I will be glad to advise you, or you can call me at any time. My office number is 313-372-1807
I am going to attempt to erect a historic marker on Ventura Boulevard to pay tribute to Vince Gironda, the father of modern bodybuilding – the guru, as he is often called. If anyone would like to send in donations, they will be greatly appreciated. I also plan to use the money from the sale of the courses for this project so a lot depends on how sales go. My address is NSP Research Nutrition, c/o/ Ron Kosloff, 15255 E. Seven Mile, Detroit, MR 48205.
In writing this article about Vince Gironda, I don’t want to imply that he was perfect.
To a lot of people he had his faults, but then don’t we all? You’re never going to meet a perfect person, ever. Yes, he had his faults, but he sure had his positives. He knew what he was talking about as far as bodybuilding goes. One of his faults, he admitted, was that he had a battle with the grape in liquid form. This happened after the death of his first wife. But no matter. Nobody is perfect. I truly felt deeply for this man. I became very emotional while writing this article. It’s a tribute to Vince, a tribute to his greatness. Everything I have written comes from my heart. I wasn’t at Vince’s funeral, but If I had, this would have been my eulogy to him.
When I walk into a gym for a workout, I instinctively think of Vince, for that is the profound effect he had on me. Students I have trained relate the same feeling to me as if he were watching them. I always ask my students to promise me they will tell people it was the guru’s methods that gave them their physique, so that his methods will live on.
My advice to young bodybuilders is to remember the old German proverb, “Ve git too soon oldt und too late schmart.” Almost to a T my students who make progress in a short amount of time say they realize that they had wasted one, two, three or four years on worthless training. Don’t do that yourself. Listen to Vince and give him a chance.
In my life, I’ve met very few people who didn’t speak with a forked tongue, as the Indians used to say of the white man. There are only two reasons in life why people lie. One is for personal gain, and the other is to make money. Got it? There are no other reasons. There are people who give and take in the bodybuilding game, so you’d better know who they are. Vince gave to bodybuilding his whole life and took nothing. He became very angry when talking to the phonies in the game, like the phony drug users who are all around us. Of course, I totally agreed with him on that subject. Most people just follow the crowd in every phase of their life, but if you are perceptive, you have to realize that all of us profit from visionary people like Vince. I put his contribution in fitness and in bodybuilding in the same category as Thomas Jefferson, Henry Ford, Franklin Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, Hippocrates, etc. He never was a profiteer like some people in this game. Again, you know exactly who they are. He was, as Bob Seger said, like a rock. He never wavered as he took vicious and monumental abuse for his different views – just like the famous men mentioned above. Even I, as a proponent of his methods, have received abuse. Years ago people at the gym used to laugh at me behind my back, but how times have changed!
Those who once laughed at me are now coming to me for advice.
Vince’s most glaring shortcoming was that he didn’t have money to promote and market his theories. If he had, oh my goodness, what a revelation that would have been! I have a picture in my office of Vince at age 46, when he had attained the best shape of his life. His research just kept progressing and getting better. He was only 5′ 8″ tall but to me he was 8′ 5″. His size and the fact that he didn’t possess a genetically gifted physique and structure made him become a scientist and sculptor of his body. He did this better than anybody because he had to. Then he passed his knowledge on to his students. He would be very proud to know that people call me today concerning his methods, as I observed that the great majority of them are very intelligent, and Vince loved intelligent people.
I feel very fortunate that on my trek through life, I’ve had great, honest, fair and knowledgeable people teach me lessons of life. Vince was one of the best. He has created a cult of people throughout the United States and the world who hold him in the highest esteem. My heart is heavy because he truly had nothing to live for after he closed his gym. I can no longer go to L.A. and work out and learn from him. As Dr. John said, he was in the right place but it must have been at the wrong time. I know that there are thousands of people who hate the fact he’s passed and won’t be around any longer, but then again maybe he will!
I truly respected and loved this guy. I will miss him very much. Goodbye to the greatest trainer of all!
I dedicate this article to Vince’s widow Madelaine, his son Guy, my friends Ray Raridon, Chris Arigona, Steve Patton, John Balik and Gene Mozee, all the old members of Vince’s Gym, his fans and students, my students, all the people who have called me, and especially to my friend Bob Kennedy of Muscle Mag International, for including this article in his fine publication. Thank you so much!

I have been following you post on Vince for some time now and read every thing you have forwarded. First thanks for helping keep a legend alive. A lot of what you have forwarded has made sense and to be honest with you I have got a new excitement for the hobbie of bodybuilding. I have even practaced some of the exercises and become a firm believer in Vince and his methods. I would love the opportunity to read this revised book and model the techniques and diet and see what out come a 46 year old can have.
I would tell my friends Vince is the real thing and some of the things you have forwarded make sense as there are so many options out there and seems like something new comes out daily backed by these companies looking to make more money. I would say by applying Vince’s simple principles we can gain the greatest results and not have to spend a fortune doing it. Time to go back to the basics.
To question number 1 I say that Vince Gironda method will change my training and like by forgiving me.The first time I ever started to work out with weights I started right with Vince Gironda 8×8. unfortunately I listened to a miriad of comments telling that the Gironda method was obsolete. I listened to that and lost the 8×8 until now. I will change my physique with Vince’s method giving my body what he had once.
to question number 2 I say that he/she who I will suggest Vince’s path I’d say that Vince is a winning choice because he didn’t change his view with the changing wind but he kept on sharing his thoughts which years later had been proved right.

Fantasic info…I would love to have the physique Vince had.I learned thru Vince that Nutrition is the “KEY” to success.I sent off for a Bodybuilding course from Vince when I was 10 and asked him the “Secret to Bodybuilding Success” he wrote on the cover of the course: DEAR ED: THE DIFFERANCE IS ATTITUDE–VINCE GIRONDA.I have that “framed” in my office.Between Vince and Rheo H Blair you have all the info you need to build a Prize winning physique the Natural way..Best of Health and Wealth, Edward Graham
Answering the 2 questions I find very interesting the work of Vince, now we can see there are many things new about work out, but we can see that the tecniques of the begining of bodybuilding worked too and that the base of all things that we find today and some exercises, routines, tecniques and studies maybe are not the correct or they does’nt work. I would like to learn about the right bodybuilding knowledge from an expert as Vince Gironda, because I can see his work and not especulations.
Hi Mike! First of all I’d like to thank you for making public this information. I’m 27 years old and been researching about health and bodybuilding for quite some time on my free time. Haven’t done much “on field” though, since I didn’t used to like the pain and discipline it implied. First I had to build it in my self to do it and have the exact results I aimed for. So I began seriously training this year after recovering from a hepatitis. I’ve tried many routines and techniques in the past two years to see which one would “fit” and make sense. I found a couple very descent and good enough, but I stumbled across your page last week and seem so a doc to my way of thinking I immediately changed my whole routine to make it happen. Note that usually takes me a couple of weeks for me to consider using any routine. I just have to say I Love It. Even with the little info you’ve posted Ive been feeling so much better and see results! I know the 8×8 routine is not for rookies like me, but I’m very aware of my body and my limits and I know how to respect them while taking full advantage of this info!
1) How do you think your training would benefit and your life would improve if you were to learn more about Vince’s methods and techniques?
just my overall strength, stamina and mind awareness have been greatly improved in 8+ days, I can’t imagine how far I could go a complete guide.
2) If you were to tell a friend about how Vince Gironda could help them and what you find interesting about him, what would you say?
He’s all about efficiency, results, all-natural development. And I’d say:”look at me! All of this improvement is thanks to his knowledge!”
Thanks again Mike! God bless!
My life would change by becoming leaner by following Vince’s nutritional rules. My training has changes from being more like a bodybuilder and not lifting like a power lifter. I could help a friend with Vince’s knowledge by recommending this book and website
My life would benefit as Vince is the ultimate trainer. Being a novice and out of shape with challenges, only the best would give me the kind of edge I need to get to where I want and need to be.
As far as recommending him….go with the best and you can only go up up and away from all the rest!
Definitely GO for it!
Charles
I often read Vince’s aritcle in MuscleMag International when I was a teenager growing up in the 80’s. I always found it funny how and entertaining to read how rude he was. In doing so I failed to realize just how smart he was.
I have read and tried many philosophies throughout my years. I am now 39 and by other people’s accounts look 10 years younger due to proper nutrition and training; however, I am no expert and I would like to know Vince’s philosophies in order to expand my wealth of knowledge and yes of course benefit from knowing them as well. Even if learn only one thing I feel it would be worth it and learning is never a waste of time or effort.
I would simply tell people that if they follow Vince’s methods they cannot fail to somehow improve their lives not only physically but mentally. If I have learned one thing in my many years of training is that the body ages and we have to change mentally with it. The more principles and philosophies you learn will only make it easier to cope with the change and make the proper adjustments.
Thank you.

There is only one way to describe Vince: He is a man’s man. No gimmicks, no lies, no steroids, just good honest bodybuilding that will put you in the best shape of your life. I think we could all learn to apply Vince’s methods in our lives to become not just better bodybuilders, but also better people.
Amazing article. You can truly see your respect, love and admiration for the man almost dripping off the page. Thanks for shining the light on such a revolutionary and important figure in fitness culture, one that I may not have gotten to know without your attention.
1) I’m eager to delve into Vince’s programs and insights in greater detail because I know it will have a profoud impact on my health and physique. Vince’s own physique and praise from many admirers like yourself Mike is a testament to this. It will also help me to “de-program” a lot of the junk and misinformation I’ve absorbed from the marketing savvy fitness snake oil salesmen that seem to proliferate the modern fitness industry. A greatly improved physique and overall health will have untold benefits that will create a positive ripple effect into all areas of my life.
2) In recommending Vince and his methods to my friends, I’d say that not only will your physique be dramatically enhanced for the better, but Vince’s philosophies on holistic health will create better mind/body harmony that will last a lifetime.
Thanks again Mike!
Great entry, you won a free copy!
Wow, great news and something to be truly thankful for here on our Canadian Thanksgiving. I would’ve bought a copy anyhow but I’ll ensure this will immediately be put to good use.

My training would improve, because I would have more info available on how nondrugged bodybuilders should train. My life would improve by not wasting my time and health on terrible, nonproductive workouts and unhealthy diets. That leaving more time for family, friends, and improving other aspects of my life.
He would help my friend by passing on no BS information that will improve his training. He was a maverick. He didn’t care about dogma or popular opinion. Many of his beliefs are just being shown to be correct and it may take another 50 yrs to prove some of the others.
There is so much misleading information these days about training and nutrition, Vince book would help me stay on track, keep progressing through training and nutrition! I want to know from the best, this book would be a life changing experience to my knowledge and what i will do with the information to help myself and other get to their fitness goals!
For me, learning proper methods and techniques just like anything else in life would allow me to expand and progress properly and shadow in the footsteps of someone who accomplished so much with so little. Knowledge is the key to anything in life and persistance along with truth creates achieving high goals.
I would recommend and tell a friend about Vince mainly because theres nothing left to try and sell. What he did works, and just by looking at him, any fool can tell the wealth of knowledge that lies within that man.
God Bless
I look at the results that Vince achieved with his students and can see that this is what I want to learn about and show others who are interested. In telling other people about Vince’s methods, it appears that he understood completely the importance of boosting the liver and blood and for better digestion and assimilation, to produce far better results naturally.
ii’ve been trying vince’s 8×8 for 2 weeks now and I love it. something happend to my original submission?
Just goes to prove that not much has changed in the iron game as far as what actually works. Vince had the balls to say what no one else would.

Dear Mr. Westerdal:
Although I have not read Mr. Gironda’s articles on body building, much less his books, which, as you have informed us, have been out of print for some time, I can imagine what a marvelous Teacher of body building Mr. Gironda was based on the respect and adulation you pay your Teacher every time you send us another piece of invaluable information about Mr. Gironda’s training methodology which was, judging by his students, absolutely top-notch and, unfortunately, far ahead of his time. I cannot help noting that you were one of Mr. Gironda’s students and the love and veneration that you pay your Teacher’s life work shows that you, Mr. Westerdal have learned much more than training techniques from Mr. Gironda, and I hope that your readers are learning from you to be grateful and appreciative of their teachers as you are of Mr. Gironda’s work with you.
I am a teacher myself [a community college professor], and I commend and admire you on your appreciating your Teacher’s work for his students, including yourself. I could not have missed this beautifully wonderful point about you, and I hope that you will not consider the above as irrelevant to your two questions that you expect us to answer.
Answering your first question, I would say that despite a lot of information on training and fitness that is easily available today, much of it is too commercialized to be trusted; therefore, based on your sincere and honest respect for Mr. Gironda’s methodology, should I win the book, I would hope that it would finally allow me to become fit at 64, which is just a number and today this number is not a very big one either, so i still expect to find the material that would allow me to shed fat and gain muscle to become as fit as i would like to.
If I were to tell my friends about Mr. Gironda and his inestimable contribution to body building, I would, instead of speaking myself, e-mail them your articles on Mr. Gironda, as I have done for some of my friends with whom we share passion for body building and fitness [cf. 8 reps X 8 sets technique and the excellent additional information about Mr. Gironda, as the Father of modern body building, specifically of the importance of definition in a body builder]. Having read your articles on Mr. Gironda, I do not think I should be able to speak on Mr. Gironda, the doubtlessly eminent Teacher of body building half as well and as poignantly as you have been doing, and may God bless you and yours for your ability to appreciate Mr. Gironda, your Teacher, and your ability to resist claiming your Teacher’s work as yours. Many of Gironda’s students, as you have mentioned it in one of your articles, have failed the Test. Thank you for teaching us more than some of Mr. Gironda’s body building techniques. Mr. Gironda in Heaven should be pleased with you as His appreciative and beholden student.
Being military my training background is predominantly athletic (vice aesthetic) and bodybuilding is relatively new to me. However, I learned about Mr. Gironda during my last deployment to Iraq when a friend introduced me to German Volume Training. Neither of us knew much about it, just that it’s what the ‘old school dudes’ did. Our results were so dramatic that upon return I earned my CPT and started researching it. Connecting the dots, led me to my interest in Mr. Gironda. I don’t currently take clients but instead help other service members reach their goals. Despite individual differences (and specified goals the Navy sets), I incorporate at least some elements of Mr. Gironda’s principles for every person I work with. For myself, his principles are a constant foundation. I’ll step away periodically due to events, limited access to facilities, or preparing for a test on a specific skill. But I consistently return to it whenever I can. With that said, I’m certain it’s imperfect and I’d like to learn more. Most importantly, CPT and all, I feel naïve on nutrition. I’m sure he’d hate that, but I’m trying to learn as much as I can.
If I were to tell someone I was already working with about Mr. Gironda, they’re already converted. But if it was someone new – honestly, I wouldn’t mention his name at all at first… they have to earn it. Instead, I’d ask them to come workout with me and end it with ‘Eat clean, bring your intensity, and I’ll worry about the rest for now.’ If they can hang for two weeks – so they KNOW the results and what’s ahead – I’ll start educating them (presuming I learn more as well). If they can’t, they don’t care enough to use either of our time. Never half-ass anything.

Vince cetainly was one of a kind! He was a purist , unfortunately the state of bodybuilding today is diastrous. Its more chemical warfare then bodybuilding. His methods and training were revolutionary. Its a shame that the young generation missed out on Vince ‘s methods. Now they have a second chance thanks to your writings !!
I started working out in the early 60’s so the name Vince Gironda is familiar to me.
When I turned 60 last year I decided to begin competing in powerlifting. Specifically the bench press.
I obtained the critical bench program and I am on my second round having increased my bench from 195 to 250. (I weigh 181 pounds)
I have already incorporated several of the exercises you illustrated in the last email that Vince used when he trained.
I believe in his methods and know that it will help me as I train to establish a new NC State record in the bench press.
In today’s day and age, when everyone wants to deliver that perfect niche, sometimes “Old School” tried and true ways bring back a grounding that can’t be improved upon. Vince Gironda was gruff enough to knock the ego wind from those that “felt” they had achieved something , and lead them to achieve an even higher level. To those that he knocked heads with I say “Don’t ask for help and not accept the advice that is given”. He applied and taught techniques that he had used himself with much success.
Hi Mike , being 57 years old i can remember reading about Vince and the guys he trained when i was in my late teens across the pond here in the uk .
the american magazines were the only ones i read and had to wait ages for them to arrive in the newsagents .
vince was a very interesting guy to read about and his exercises were hard to do especially the roman chair situps which were really a leg excercise . all of the bodybuilders of the late sixties , and seventies were excellent and in proportion unlike the thick and bulky monsters of today.
Excellent that you are bringing out the new book and look forward to reading it wether i win a copy or not .
all the best Mike , Fred (England)
oh and bye the way friends and training buddies would be reminded that a great body is one that is in proportion with a tight waistline , cheers
I have never heard of Vince before not having come from a body building back ground but reading your articles and hearing about Vince’s views, I realise I have gone off coarse by believing the marketers and all the B.S. I used to be lean and muscular from many years of yoga. I started to eat 6 times a day try all sorts of expensive supplements and I started to put on weight. For the first time in my life I got fat and I was training like mad in the gym. It was a Bill Phillip’s book that got me started on this path of useless non improvement. Now I have gone back to the way I used to train with a few other things from Vince and I am getting my lean body back. Thank you for making me believe in myself again and viva le Vince! Nandano NZ
question #2
Being an “old school” weightlifter I found success back in the day with Vince’s methods and nutritional training. I did the egg thing and the raw milk. All someone needs to convince them of his methods is look at the bodybuilders and strong men he has trained. Enough said. Actions speak louder than words. I loved that Vince would not allow anyone to shout him down when he shared his views.
I never heard of that guy in the picture but damn he cut, but back to the article freakin awesome I usually lift weights how my football coach taught me but I found out that he was a dumbass, should have known from him coaching. But I will try to implement this guy teachings looking at the picture he knows what he talking about,
PEACE
Big Squatch
I think that the article was inspiring it is good to hear insights from someone who from all accounts was a legend in his own right.
To answer question one I think it would definitely benefit me to hear what was done in days gone by where fitness is concerned. There are so many voices out there and I tend to get confused with all that is being said and advertised. It would be very interesting to hear his take on female training.
For question two I would say to anyone who is serious about transforming their bodies and minds that this is definitely someone worth listening to and emulating.
Great article — Vince’s Gym was an iconic symbol on Ventura Blvd where I grew up — I am happy to see the original content being restored and released in the spirit of it’s intent. It’s real, cuts through the hype and introduces the basic principles related to nutrition and exercise; I can’t wait to check it out. As a teenager, I missed by 40 yards having attended the gym across the street. I like Vince’s no nonsense approach that fits with my philosphy of natural, organic fitness and I believe that I can increase my gains and really achieve the vision for my body.
Vince girondas work and knowledge has hugely expanded my knowledge of bodybuilding and given me incredible
perspective on the philosophy of weighifting, growing stronger, and applying intensity and strength to your training and your life. I feel by learning vinces methods, I can not only
have knowledge to change the way I look, but empower my think and grow my confidence in my physical-mental
connection and solidarity.
If I was to share Vince Knowledge with a friend, I would say he was a bodybuilding pioneer and the first true performance coach. He understood the importance of hormonal and metabolic health, of nutrition and recovery and intensity of training. His knowledge can give you the power and perspective to change your health and your life
Mike, I already have a copy of Vince ebook and every bit of information is priceless. Depending on how long ago this article was written, I just want to know if I can still send a donation to Ron so I can contribute to the Ventura Blvd “Vince Gironda Trubute.
Great article! It’s clear that I have spent my life being inundated with training BS. The Iron Guru is perfect for me to empty my cup of training knowledge (to the point of your average gym ape) and refill it with the correct information to take my training to the level where I want it to be. (Overloaded)!
A GREAT ARTICLE!!!!! I AM DOING AND I LOVE IT!!!!! THANKS BRO!!!!! ALEX FROM BRAZIL……
Great stuff! Love learning about vince…THANK YOU!!
Nowadays we are seeing in our everyday life a rehash of the old that is coming back as new, in everything even the movies, no insight to come up with new stuff but remakes. Now, Vince’s training routines and nutrition advice have always been the original that has stand the test of time, this is no rehash but the tried, tested and true. I still use the beef liver tablets, real old school.
Nice article
Article very encouraging. Just started using his 8×8 set of exercises that I got from an earlier article. At my age (58) I am trying to rebuild my body safely after yrs. of isolated exercises as I was earlier taught. This saves a lot of time and fits in what my trainer has shown me.
Very heart felt and extremely interesting article. I am over 50 and still working out. I still believe I have the opportunity to grow and prosper. Training brings us a different quality of life. It is life insurance policy that we and our loved ones benefit from while we are alive. There are plenty of old remedies that were created a long time ago that aren’t marketed by Doctors or the medical profession, that are every bit as good or better then a lot of the modern day medical procedures of today. I would love to learn more form Vince.
I agree with you, there is way to much hype and not always enough substance in the new training methods. There is an awful lot of good and unfortunately an awful lot of bad. I would tell anybody who wants to hear i,t that working out is a life time achievement award and you must know the history to get to the glory. This gentleman Vince seems like a man I would like to get to know through his teachings.
this stuff is awesome.. ive been applying it to my life style ever since i read the first sentence!
I don’t think my body or my life would improve by folowwing Vince’s methods, I KNOW they would! There is no question about it. My body would become lean, fit and healthy! My kidney problems and my many allergies would become a thing of the past! My newfound healthy living lifstyle would propel me to boundless joy because I would be constantly in awe of how wonderful life is when you are painfree, healthy, vibrant, and energetic! When my body is functioning to the ultimate, my mind and soul have to follow! Vince’s methods and techniques would literally and figurative change my life for the BEST (not better, the BEST!)!!!
What I really absolutely love about Vince Gironda’s ideas and methods are that they are wholy natural. There is absolutely nothing artificial or fake about what you put in your body. All the exercises are based on movements that occur naturally in daily living. All the food and exercises that he uses are based on what he found through own trial and error to maximize the body’s function. Anything of Vince’s that I have read or have been told about I have been able to duplicate and get the same results. I hate marketing disclaimers that read, “your results may vary.” With Vince’s they won’t. You will get what you put in! Vinces’s methods glorify the body. He trusts your body and nature. He proposes natural, whole foods, natural exercises, and natural rest to develop your physique to its greatest potential. His methods work with your body and not against it. It is the natural, wholesome way-no bullshit!
That is why I think that it is wonderful. I can’t wait to get my hands on that book! I will devour it!!
I come from ukraine, many years I have been training. At 51 yrs old I have tried Vince’s methods as often as I could.Trained in root cellar many years,So was able to apply some not all becauase of equipment.I live Canada now, most of info i had to leave on farm very quickly because of army. Some things I find on computer sites. It would be nice to have full info on Mr.Gironda.I still train 2-3 times per week. Most monies goes back to ukraine to help rest of family.Train hard guys train clean, follow vinces routines you cannot fail,Sincerely Timosh.ps Congratulations on keeping all of Mr.Girondas work and name alive.
As a 51 year old male who had been very active and healthy most all my life, I’ve recently had a number of health issues. After being tested for reasons for my decline, I’ve come to the conclusion that low testosterone levels have had a lot to do with it. Long term stress from work, poor nutrition and shift work have taken a toll on me physically. I believe that training Vince’s way would help raise those levels, help return that vitality of my youth and improve my outlook on life. I am reaching a point where I MUST do something, or wither up and prepare to die. I have always been inspired by the greats such as Jack Lalane and Jack Armstrong. By following the advise of these Giants, I look forward to not just talking the talk, to my friends and realitives, But by walking the walk. This, to me, is the greatest inspiration of all.
Regardless of whether I win a copy or buy it, I need to dive into a copy of this book, devouring the info from one of the legends of bodybuilding.
I have been lifting weights religiously for 14 years. I put on about 50 lbs. The first 4 years. I have yet to gain anymore for the last 10 years. I’ve done powerlifting, bodybuilding and various other workouts. I’ve tried about every supplement and Ive read numerous magazines and books on weightlifting. Thought I knew everything but obviously not since I haven’t improved my physique in the last ten years. Just started the 8×8 workout last week for a change. Was extremely impressed with the powerful pumps. Very impressed with what I’ve read so far about Vince. Would really like to be able to have the physique I’ve always wanted. I’m 44 yrs old and would really love for Vince’s philosophy to get me there. Would like to show a friend the physique I have that was made by Vince.
I started training in 1945 at age 13 using the George F. Jowett courses ( 5 little booklets on “How to mold a Mighty etc.). As most growing kids do, I made pretty good progress, but I didn’ t really know what real bodybuilding was all about until the 1960’s when I was introduced to (In my opinion) the two most knowledgeable men I in the bodybuilding and nutrition fields……Vince Gironda and Rheo H. Blair…..I am now 78 years young and still train and, eat, and supplement according to their instructions….believe me, it works…..try it…. Joe Brosmer
1) Having read a number of Vince Gironda articles, Unleashing the Wild Physique, and the Vince Gironda ebook origional version, I look forward to learning from the New Updated ebook. Just one New Nugget of Infomation from Vince’s Genious Mind could make a huge difference in our lives.
2) Vince had experimented testing so many different ways to build muscle and get fit. Both Men and Women actors were sent to his Gym to get their bodies into shape by the movie studio’s. Once I read about a woman that wanted to loose weight and what should she do. Vince recommended exercising with weights. He did not sell weight equipment himself so had no vested interest in recommending weight training instead of running, yoga, swiming as examples. So my friends that want to get in the best shape of their lives need to listen to Vince Gironda’s recommendations. WE can all benefit.
this article has open the way of my body building conceps….., its very inspire……
I have tried many things that don’t work I have heard of Vince earlier on and I realize that he was boo hooed by most other trainers But what I have read in your articles I am sure that the answer lies in his nutrition and exercise program. I have heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure and want more vibrant health. I have been following other programs for a long time and am tired of little or no results. Your articles have convinced me that this is the answer.
I was in a bad accident back in 2002 told I would never walk again – well I have done more than that proving the Doc’s that i worked with wrong time after time. I’m almost 40 just a short 3 months away and still stationed in Iraq and could run faster than my teen sons that are over 6 ft tall with me their mom here only 5 ft 3 inches. I don’t know now they are training on my old Navy Seal books etc. I want to be able to prove them wrong that I’m not old or a has been. I can not help the fact I have been stuck in this mess for 7 yrs taking care of my fellow soldiers etc. I’m not the girly girl that most moms are I just want to get back in shape and have a chance to beat my sons for a few more yrs at this.
My father was fat, out of shape, lazy and unable to take part in my life because of his obesity. I want my kids to know a fit, strong, capable dad.
At 50 with a full gym in my basement I can tell you I’ve tried everything and nothing has worked the way I expected – and I tell you I don’t mind the hard workouts at 5 am.
1) If this system works I may not have to give up the dream of a naturally made cut body one last time.
2) If it works I would tell my friends to quite wasting their time and cheating themselves – Now is the time to invest exactly what is needed to finally get to the finishline you have dreamed of. Its time to begin today.
As I am living in a developing country, no much knowledge is existing. I am a teenager who is interested in bodybuilding. I want to learn about it. That will be the first complete eBook I will have a chance to read. I would love to get one of your copy. I don’t even have the Arnold book although I want to read it. But now I am happy and hopeful that I can have a chance to read Vince’s eBook by giving a comment here. I just have to pray to be one of the winners.
Honestly,I will tell my friends that Vince is the Father of Bodybuilding because they don’t know about that. Starting talking about Vince from that is the most attractive way to lead them to Vince’s techniques. I also had known that Vince is the father of bodybuilding only when you gave me his article. Thanks you so much. Hoo,… I still need to know much about bodybuilding, right? I think even telling them about how to eat egg can take their attentions because they just know traditional things. I will be looking forward to the book. Thanks………
Sincerely,
Jarvis
My training and my life would dramatically improve simply by working out efficiently and providing all the necessary nutrients to prime the anabolic environment; hence, muscle growth. This translates to less time in the gym, more time to live and enjoy this wonderful life. Since I started training, I sought after the most innovative training ever devised by man. Vince Gironda’s approach to training was light years ahead of its time. Circa 1983, I perused an article that had been penned by Vince Gironda, and I thought to myself: Eureka! The holy grail of training. As soon as I could, I implemented the techniques, and piqued many curiosities. Scientifically and nutritionally sound, Vince Gironda system of bodybuilding has and will always endure the test of time.
If I were to tell a friend about Vince Gironda’s methods and techniques, I would impart the genius behind the system, the brevity and intensity of every workout, the efficient training and more importantly, the nutrition that encompasses the training. Without the nutritional component, it wouldn’t work. I cannot thank you enough, Mike, for keeping the legacy of Vince Gironda alive. To ignore him is to simply remain ignorant of such great knowledge.
As trainer myself new trends seem to overshadow what the real meaning of training is. I enjoy reading and learning from all experts such as yourself. It will be an honor for me to learn from one of the greatest such as Vince Gironda. From you articles I have learned and implemented most of these techniques used by Vince on some of my clients and my self. It is so cool to see there (clients) eyes open in awe of how such a small variation to an accustomed exercise intensifies such muscle group. I am always asked “where do get this stuff?” I always reply from an “old friend”, from the 50’s his name is Vince Gironda they laugh at the fact that i am young and respond in such manner. However,I believe this book will be of great benefit for myself and improving my clients results. Mike keep up the good work. I truly enjoy your work and just as Vince I aways look foward to your articles which are full of knowledege. Thank for your work.
Sincerely,
Otto
Over the last few months I have learned a lot about myself. I’ve learned that dedication to a cause is what is needed to completely overcome it. More importantly I’ve learned that I don’t ever want to be seen as obsolete and in order to do that I need to present myself as the most respectful and hard working person there is who treats others properly. If I knew more about Vince Gironda’s methods and techniques I would be able to apply them to my current goals of getting into the best shape of my life and of becoming a full time personal trainer that produces great results.
If I were telling a friend about Vince’s methods I would tell them that Vince’s methods get great results with only a little time in the gym. I also believe that the old school methods are the best methods look at the results on Vince himself.
Thanks for all the info already provided.
Hello Mike,
The article was a great read. Powerfully written as your passion is amplified with fact. You have voiced what many of the educated and informed trainers have been thinking, but have not been encouraged to advocate. Profit from supplements has become far greater than the actual training within the fitness industry. If only the same amount of money was spent on the promotion of health and well being as that of supplement marketing every nation would be physically better off. The Ancient Greeks didn’t have ‘Mega mass 2000’ the Roman Gladiators weren’t sponsored by ‘Dymatize’ nor did they need to consume a complex blend of synthetically produced hormones. They harnessed practical principles modern to the kinesiology of their time.
Mike I yearn to equip my resource collection with a copy of the updated Vince Gironda eBook, to not just improve my training but the training of my clients members and trainees. Its a shame when the skills of a trainer are not passed on to others through mentoring as many of the ‘trade secrets’ are often poorly diluted or lost.
I look forward to your future posts.

Hi Ron,
Not beating round the bush as, I can see for myself what a Great Guy Vince Gironda was and how his training & nuitriton, methods, tricks and techniques, have, are and will be helping thousands of people to achieve the kind of physique they are looking out for. I might not have been able to catch up with other articles that might have been posted, however i started with “Really funny story about ARNOLD” and their I saw your contact number and tried to reach you as well, so as to get trained Vince’s way, however cudnt get through. Here is the answer to the first question
A1) Well as everyone wants to look and feel good and at the same time be in the best shape and peak of health, I am also one of those health and fitness freaks. Also when one looks good, has the best shape, definitely you can help others do so and achieve the expected results out of their workouts, by spreading the Legendary Vince Girondas, good word by serving the society and make more and more people aware about the nuitrition and workout techniques of the great man and make him immortal, that in itself would be like paying a tribute to the legend. So I would go allaround and speak to everyoneabout it, if i fortunately get to learn Vince’s methods and techniques.
A2) If you were to tell a friend about how Vince Gironda could help them and what I find interesting about him, I would you say. He was a Great man of his times, who was chosen and gifted by God to understand the Human body and how to bring it in the best shape by natural diet without using any steroids or drugs. Also I would show him the Legends Pics on “cool video (bodybuilding pioneer)”and show him how he had sculpted his body during those times naturally, when everyone was intersted in looking big and bulky and gaining a lot of mass, rather than muscle mass and have a chiselled and ripped body like Vince had and so much more, which I think i cannot write as its endless, hence i would explain him that these were just a feww things out of the many which I found interesting about him.
Naomaan (India)
It seems to me that Vinces ideas line up with DR Weston Price’s theories on nutrition , by which I am convinced that a natural whole food, high protein diet filled with organ meats and fermented products such as kefir is the way to go. However there has been no one that i have found until now that promoted this AND was successful to my knowledge. Now that I see this path has beened by Vince I am excited to go further down it. I am so tired of reading nutitional theories by people who are not interested in my performance or my overall health, I have been finding my way so to speak weeding out lies and incomplete truths, it has been a long road….I want something that really works this it.
If i could tell a friend about Vince and his methods i would say: See here, this fellow advocated whole foods, fats and organ meats, was in in phenomenal shape, discipled others, did not let greed compromise him,was light years ahead of his time, produced superior results with whole raw milk and did not die from disease and sickness at age 79.His was a life well lived!

Thanks, This article is really informationl. As I am living in a developing country , knowledge about bodybuilding cannot be got easily even with payment. But now, I can have a chance to read the greatness of Vince’s philosophy and I am happy about that if I could win one of the copies. I don’t even have Arnold book to read. This will be my first complete book to read if my wish to get this come true.
I will tell my friends that Vince is the father of bodybuilding because they don’t know about that. I think telling about that firstly could get their attentions for me because they don’t know that. I had known because of you, and I want to learn more. I am interesting in Vince because I either don’t want to use drugs. Vince’s ebook really could help me out. I wish I could get one. Thanks for reading my letters.
Mr. Gironda was a visionary. Such people are not fully appreciated for decades, and it’s gratifying to see that his methods are now being recognized as correct.
After reading quite a bit of info on Vince, I must say my training and training of others has changed dramatically! But I missing some vital links to put it all together. Now following Vince’s training principles as much as I can, I’ve seen a lot of difference in my own body and my approach to life. Following his methodology is only going to improve and enhance my well being and the well being of others.
Being a PT to several people I’m already trying to change peoples lives and thinking on what their body should look like. A lot of clients always tell me I don’t want to be freaky huge, I just want to look good with my top off! On showing clients the physique types of the legends from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s they all stare in awe when the see vince’s physique. Inspired by what male and females deem to be hot sexy looking bodies and not freakishly huge, I personally am endevouring to train those who want this type of physique a priority so then everyone and stare at them in awe!
Loving the articles, great work!
With all I read only one thing comes to my mind. how the methods this outstending genius discovered or/and used can be applied to strength training or just general wellness instead of only bodybuilding. It would be important to counterbalance what the mass media put into the mind of the public, including medical professionals, that further on misled everybody. Only a very few has the mental power and curage to disregard the overwhelming false music of the advertisment industry. From university studies to laboratorie reports, you can find the sponsors marketing interests. It was refreshing to read some honest info from the past that is ahead of its time even today.
Thanks for this terrific article, Mike! Your passion for bodybuilding, helping others reach their goals, and your love and respect for Vince Gironda are clearly evident here! I would love to be able to train as he prescribed but I have a severe back problem that prevents me from pushing myself too much. I am trying at my own pace and most of my friends think I am crazy!! They say I am trying to fight nature and I will not succeed. Well, I have passed the 50% make to me target…no thanks to them! 🙂 Am looking forward to reading more!
Take care! Cheers!

Investigating CB for a few months now and have learned a lot from you. I have been following your articles on Gironda and everything so far I instinctively feel is the truth. A remarkable man.
Quick stats … I am a 58 year old female. I trained in my twenties when it wasn’t popular for women to do so and loved it. Then lost my way for a very long time. I have just lost 72lbs and have 70 more to go. I have been conditioning, waking my body up again. As I am losing I see whispers of my old self still there. I had great legs and lats! I intend to again.
Questions:
1. This is it … After months of wading through tons of info … I believe I have found true north in the avalanche of bodybuilding propaganda. I am just conditioning right now but with this program I believe I will be able to step into training soon and achieve the results I seek. The right information and the right tools can make all the difference in your focus and results. Yes .. my life is going to change big time in a multitude of ways as a result of Vince’s approach. I look forward to it.
2. Already people are asking me what I am doing because I have changed so much. I tell them I am researching nutrition and bodybuilding. I tell them I am eating clean and nutritionally balanced meals and have begun using glandular’s. I have been able to explain some things I have learned to others but my education is very incomplete Mike so I cannot yet talk very knowledgeably about Vince’s methods. I intend to study this information and learn as much as I can from the new book and will gladly point anyone in the right direction. I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I am keeping a photographic history of my transformation and I intend to help anyone struggling like I have.
Jill
Congrats You’re A Winner!
Wow! Thanks so much Mike! I have spent the last few days researching Vince more and I think I am going to see some real movement in my quest to regain my physique and health with this information. I was too chicken to do this in my initial submission but I am putting it out there now for all the world to see … not only do I intend to take off all this fat I have been carrying around but I fully intend to actually COMPETE!!! I have written it down, very specifically and visualize walking across the stage in a sexy suit sporting a smokin bod daily! I am going to transform this body in the next 14 months and on my 60th birthday I am going to announce my first entry into a competition.
OMG!! I said it out loud!!
PS. Overweight people know more about dieting than anyone and most of it is BS! It is my opinion that this sport is going to be one of the vehicles to get the truth out about nutrition, real fat loss and empowering people to take back their health!

im a young man, age 17 who wants to learn the real way to build a great body. I play football and always feel that the lifting we do dosent work. After readin the above article i feel that a book about vince’s training would change my life forever!!!!
1.- I think learning more about what Vince said (and did), will help me to improve not only my external aspect, but (what´s more important) my health.
2.- When I talk about the great Vince Gironda to my friends, I say: “Stop wasting your time, your money and your health… start training in the Gironda way”.
1) As a female in my early 40’s I have worked out off and on my whole life but only recently became seriously interested in bodybuilding after picking up a magazine. I am more focused than ever before in my life with my nutrition and workout routines. People I work with are amazed with the way I eat and it seems to be a daily conversation around the table. Yet not enough to encourage any of them to change their diet. Not until recently did I even know who Vince Gironda was. I was searching for more workout info and I came across your page and read one of the articles about him. I immediately became enthralled with finding out more about him. I searched for info on his moves that I read in the 8 sets of 8 article. I am hoping to improve my strength and definition. I just started doing the perfect curl and eliminating some of my traditional ab workout which saddens me because it’s my favorite. I always did abs first before every workout. I read he believed this was counterproductive. I know that I do not want the bulky midsection that I see on many female bodybuilders. I have searched but cannot find a Gironda ab routine. His frog crunches and learning vacuuming is all I can find on the subject.
2) Honestly, he is all I’ve talked about other than my nutritional intake, in about 2 weeks. My boyfriend started bragging about Arnold so I said, “This guy deserves some credit for your idol.” I have regurgitated everything I could remember that I have read about him. I love his small waistline. Thus my obsession with finding a routine. I think applying his techniques would produce wonderful results for any natural bodybuilder.
Kudos you Won!

Mike,
I have been following these articles on Vince. I am a certified strength and conditioning coach, that trains athletes to soccer moms. I use a wide variety of training methods. One tool I use a lot is the TRX. I have been reading questions and comments about TRX training and muscle gain. There has not been any substantial evidence proving that you can or can not gain muscle size using the TRX only. So These articles that you have been writing has inspired me, to use the TRX only and follow Vince’s 8×8 format to answer this questioned. I am posting my workout routines on my blog for people to follow. So I will be letting the world wide web know about Vince Gironda and his training method mixed with today’s technology.
Hello,
(Question #1): I am 100% sure that I would benefit greatly from Vince Gironda’s methods and techniques. Just by reading these articles I can already tell how valuable this information really is. It’s a shame that people nowadays, especially the younger generation, will only listen to the people that they see in magazines covers, who a lot of times use steroids and only misguide us further. I am 19, and haven’t lifted weights in a while, but I plan on committing to taking up bodybuilding seriously. I would love to be able to follow Vince’s advice, and arrive to the gym with some true knowledge about real bodybuilding. I am recovering from an injury in my right foot, and I know that having the right information would give me that boost I need to make a great comeback into fitness and not only change my body, but also change my life as well.
(Question #2): I would tell them that Vince could help them not only with training, but also with nutrition; which is really important. His methods have been proven to work, and they can work better than the “new and popular” methods that most trainees use nowadays. What I found interesting about Vince is that he wasn’t like the others, he wasn’t after the money and willing to screw people over just to get rich. He was an honest man; he is a legend that deserves to live on.
God bless,
Carlos
I have to admit alot of ideas that Vince is dicussing are pretty impressive. I have tried to do his 8×8 workouts and it’s extremely tough. I would like to know more about is nutritional guideline since he said thats 85% of body building can you present more articles that give you step by step instructions on his nutrition
At the moment, I’m really open to a lot of training techniques. After reviewing the many articles about Vince, his training strategies and methods of living life just seem so similar to my own. Also, I can see how Vince’s methods work and that he wasn’t full of any BS; he had it right.
For my friends out there, Vince may be a weirdo to you but he’s awesome. One of the most coolest things about him was when he kicked that guy out of the gym and gave him his money back and stuff. I would love to be like that and hopefully everyone realizes that when it comes to building muscle… don’t be a baby.
really enjoying all of the information, looking forward to receive more.
I came to know of weight training quite late in life. I was a varsity judo player during my college days and only started lifting weights when I started working, first using a home gym setup and then going to the commercial gym. I have been powerlifting since 1998. Now, I have found the bodybuilding principles that are based on truths not cheating nor lies.
1) First, I am all for natural body building and strength training. Thus, I am grateful that you are are sharing the knowledge and wisdom from Vince. Second, having just started trying out Vince’s 8×8 program, I am fired up to follow the principles and more excited to see the results.
2) I will certainly share my personal experiences about applying Vince’s working principles as well as the values that underpin the training programs to my friends and colleagues. I am confident that they too will benefit from the training programs developed by the guru.
Actions speak louder than words so I don’t go in for flattery, but I would pay Vince the ultimate compliment by acting upon his advice. The results would not be hollow words that could later be denied, but rather a chiselled, rock-solid physique plainly visible: A living testament to the truth of Vince Gironda’s words.
I would ask my friends, “Why are the statues from ancient Greece and Rome labelled ‘classic’ ?” Because they display ideals of physical beauty which are timeless. Broad shoulders and lats, flaring (not bulbous) pecs, tapering down to a tight waist then flaring out again into large, yet balanced, thighs and finishing off with diamond-shaped calves. This represents the “classic physique”; it is timeless, and Vince’s methods are a blueprint for its design.
Vince’s methods and techniques would help me to correct what it is that I am doing wrong and lead me to and along the right path. For the past three years, I have been “experimenting” to find out what I should and should not do as far as losing fat and gaining muscle but only about twenty percent of that has worked. Seeing his photographs and following some of the examples that I have recently learned of, my body immediately noticed and began to respond. If I were to tell a friend how he could help them and what I find interesting about him, I would say, “(as they are looking at one of his photos), As you can see, his muscles, his entire physique, were exemplary in comparison to body builders and weight lifters of his and our time. He was a unique individual whom knew how the body should be worked to achieve the sort of look that many today crave and yearn for. He is proof that anyone can go for and maintain their body, as he did, for their entire lifetime. One without the aches, pains and slow debilitation that a life on the opposite side of the aging coin will offer. I find him intersting because he was a down-to-earth man who did what he enjoyed because he whole-heartedly loved it. Thanks to Vince, we have the finest example of all time as to what we should look like in our mid to golden years and the sort of example we should be to our current and future generations.”
1- 1st of all, thanks to Mike for introducing me to the legend Vince Gironda.I think i have read most of the articles 2-3 times each. Its just amazing information. I am someone who keeps expirementing with different workouts. i was stuck up on the 300 and spartacus workout for a while. Recently i tried the 8 x 8 and it was amaaazzzinngg. the pump i got was unbelievable. Plus what Vince told in those days are all coming true. Would love to have and learn more of Vince method’s and techniques.
2. Well i actually made a couple of my friends try out the 8 x 8 and they were alll worn out. but you could tell they enjoyed the entire workout. they have started googling about Vince ever since lol……Vince methods and techniques are truly inspirational and they do evoke changes.
Hi Mike,
i’m just turning 49. about to open my own gym. a life long dream. gym is spartan, with only a couple of benches, barbells, dumbbells, chinning bars, dipping bars and rings. I read Vince’s articles in Robert Kennedy’s mag back in the 80’s and early 90’s. for me? well great for my knowledge and would be great for learning the WHOLE story and philosophies. for my clients i have always thought Vince was a cut above the rest and would love to be able to put that information forward for others to prosper by,in fitness and physique. thank you for keeping the guru alive
yours
Peter
I bought my first Gironda book in 1976 I was sixteen and just starting training . I found that old book a couple of years back amongst some books I was throwing out . I sat down and read it and started training again after a twenty year break . I have also started to compete again in the over 50s class and have had one first place and 5 second place trophies . I get young men coming up to me and saying why do you train so fast with such small rest periods and I say its just old school mate !! Cheers Vince
My training would benefit and my life would improve simply because Vince’s had exactly the body I want to have and did it the way I want to do it, DRUG FREE. The best way to learn is from someone who already did wat you want to know. I would say to my friend that if years of doing the same thing that everybody do is not working for him, the logical thing is to do something different, and that is exactly what Vince’s methods are, DIFFERENT and INNOVATIVE.

Love the article long time trainer I am 45 years old trying to gert in the best shape of my life. Fully buy into the methods espoused by Vince. My trainer has me going hard 3 days per week 40 min at a time with supplements yes but absolutely no steroids. I weigh between 165-172 and my trainer would like me to allow my weight to go up to 185 via nutrtion and hard workouts. I run and bike pretty hard and play hockey about 40 games a season the method of training supports my activities and I believe will allow me to continue gaining strength and getting lean at the same time. This method of basic heavy strength bases lifting has given me a strong torso and back which supports my professional job. I am a dentist and in the last 4 years of training this way have not had a sore back incident at all in other words it supports my ability to make a living.. My goal for 1 year from now to deadlift 405 “b at a body weight of 170–175 I am quite confident vinces methods will keep me on the road to achieving that goal
I like reading about Vince Gironda, so thanks for posting. And I still wanna buy all his Courses and books.
Is this new updated book the same one as you were selling ealier this year??
Tomorrow I will start the 8 sets of 8 and follow it for at least 21 days to see a result. In that way I will inprove my strength and look more ripped.
I already tell people how to hold on to the dumbells and barbells with the “palm grib” and other small chances they can do and se the difference in their results. 🙂
Love from Denmark
I’m 43 yearsold, and have been lifting/training most of my life. While I’ve seen some descent gains, and strength, I belive that my training and life would fully change with learning more and implementing Vince’s methods and techniques. I’ve pretty much gone it alone, and now with this opportunity, I belive that it’d help me, and set me in the right direction.
Telling a freind about Vince would be easy. I’d tell them too how he could postively change there life, and help them to achive there goals as well; That his thoughts, ideas and practices would help them in there life and in there fitness areas as well. My interest in Vince is that he had ideas, thoughts and methods, that are vastly different then the mainstream; he knew what he was doing, and belive in it. Best of all his methods work; and are not just thoughts and words written for the sake fo taking up space.
1) How do you think your training would benefit and your life would improve if you were to learn more about Vince’s methods and techniques?
I have always hoped to be able to better help myself and others, physical health is one way to help self and others. What we see is not real, it is how we see it.
2) If you were to tell a friend about how Vince Gironda could help them and what you find interesting about him, what would you say? Passion, I have watched this whole world go nuts about being better in tune with what we are
and who we are, without passion we are not people but a bunch of talking heads in a box. Vince had it!!
At 61 years of age, I have learned two lessons: 1)Too soon old, too late wise, and 2) for maintaining health, fitness and quality of life, hormones reign supreme. By learning more about Vince’s training philosophy I would expect to significantly improve my health & fitness so that I can make better use of the wisdom I have acquired over the years.
I would tell my friends that they should look into Vince’s approach to nutrition and fitness, because his philosophy is consistent with good health science and because his proteges achieved the pinnacle of fitness without recourse to drugs and without being obsessed with the gym and unsustainable eating strategies.
Keep up the good work.
Sidney
WOW!!! Learning from Vince on nutrition and exercise is like being born again for me!
Whether I win the free ebook or not, I’m definately going to tell EVERYONE that I come into contact with about how wonderful Vince and his teaching are and I believe that every human on earth could benefit from such a guru!!!
How do you think your training would benefit and your life would improve if you were to learn more about Vince’s methods and techniques?
Well, I got to tell you over the years I have used many of vinces techniques and exercises, and a lot of these have been adopted and handed down by other well know bodybuilders. So I can say without a doubt my ecercise arsenal will double.Being a lifetime natural body builder, I can understand the differences in training for a natural guy as opposed to a un-natural guy. Theres no doubt he was ahead of his time and he understood things about nutrition that most people at the time did not even think about. Vinces methods and techniques will definitely add enthusiasm and muscle confusion to my training program without a doubt. Like now he faced a lot of criticism for fighting against what he saw as “Cheating”. Unfortunately today there are too few many that will stand up and raise the BS flag when something is not right.
If you were to tell a friend about how Vince Gironda could help them and what you find interesting about him, what would you say?
Well since I do speak with a lot of people that that spire to the natural lifestyle I thinks vinces staunch stance on Performance enhancing drugs alone would be enough to get thier attention. If they werent familiar with his principles and techniques they weould be empowered to do so.
Vince is the man. I have been inspired since I started using the workouts. I have also used them with my more experienced clients. They love them but do not enjoy the suffering until they are done. I work out at a gym with alot of juceheads. Good guys but they just do not understand what it takes to look good and maintain a healthy lifestyle. I have preached it is 80% diet for years. Nice to see Vince believed it was 85%. I stand corrected. I only wish I had the chance to meet him. He truely was a giant and from what I have seen most if not all of what he said stands up to the test of time. Screw Bill Philips and all those unatural people out their that are only interested in one thing and that is greed.I look forward to your release of Vince’s theroies and will continue to incoporate what I learn into my own training as well as my clients.
Acee 4 aces
Hey Mike,
Just want to say that I appreciate what you’re doing. Your articles and emails have helped me to overcome certain sticking points in my training (especially with bench press – the rotator cuff article helped), but you also shined the light on Vince Gironda which I’m sure a lot more people out there are thanking you for as well. The respect you have for man really shows in your writing.
I also have to say, people need this real advice you’re giving out. There is a lot of faulty training advice out there and you guys really help people achieve true results.
As for wanting to learn Vince’s methods:
1. Right now I’m at a point in my life where I’m starting over. I was never an athlete and I haven’t ever been in great shape. I have tried many times but have not been successful. I’m at a point right now where my health is beginning to decline and I have to do something about it, which is why I’m in the pursuit of being a natural bodybuilder. I want to learn about Vince’s methods because I feel that he was one of the only trainers that stayed true to his methods and beliefs even when everyone turned against him. Though he’s no longer here, I feel like his methods are still true for what I want to accomplish (for my own body). I want to learn Vince’s methods more than anything because I want to live a healthy life, and what better way to do that than learn from the guy that made bodybuilding what it is?
2. Vince was the Man. Plain and simple. He was the no BS father of bodybuilding. His methods are referred to as old-school because he didn’t try to sell people high-priced supplements and fad diets. With him there was no shortcut. He was an honest man that wanted people to be the best they could be. He only promoted hard work and proper nutrition, which is something everyone needs. He was an honest trainer, which today is a dying breed. He wasn’t in the game for the money – he was in it to teach people the right way to be the best they could be through hard work and that’s what made him a legend.
Thanks again, Mike. Looking forward for the release of the book and for more updates.

For question 1, I would hope that something he would be saying would make a difference and that it would be a big enough difference to cause my membership in the Crappy Carcass Club for amorphous blobs to be revoked. I have been working out regularly for over 35 years, am now retired, and still look like I have never set foot in a gym. I was forced by threat of developing diabetes to change my diet, get rid of as much of the excess carbs I could, and lose some weight, which I did, but not nearly enough. With all the supplements I have taken and am still taking, I wonder if any of them do anything. I wonder what is on the diet and if there are things on the diet I should not have. Then what?
For question 2, I would only recommend, out of a good conscience, something that actually worked for me. That applies for just about anything, not just exercising.
Hi Mike,
Great articles, Vince was way ahead of his time. I’m surprised how many people haven’t heard of this guy before. I’ve been incoporating some of Vince’s training techniques in my own trainig the last month or so, after reading some articles on his Vine’s site, and then I got your emails exactly at the right time. I’ve been alternating workouts with more heavy low reps sets with vince style pump training. The compounds supersets combined with the short rests the gave me an incredible pump. Make strength already skyrocketed after a couple of workouts, when I went back to the strenght oriented workouts with longer rest periods e.g. 4 sets of 4-8 reps with 2-4 minutes. In my bench workout I could do 9 reps easily with my 6RM from 2 weeks before. His nutritional knowledge make so much sense. I love the way how he keeps an open mind. I would defenitely love to win that book you got, i can’t imagine what insane gains I could make if I knew more about his methods.
I’ve already telling some other guys in my gym about his methods. One guy in my gym used vince’s 4×12 and his bench also went up immediatley. So the guys at my gym would benefit from the book as well.
I love his emphasis on living natural and doing it the natural way, no cheating and working towards a highly conditioned, strong body with great aesthetics. Today a lot of guys seem so focused on gaining weight versus a quality physic. I would much rather have 190 pound ripped and muscular physic than a bulky soft 220 pounds. Plus think about all the food you don’t have to eat, it just feels wrong the eat enormous amounts of foods while others are starving. And I think a body along the lines of Vince’s ideal could be achieved wihout enormous amounts of food. I read somewhere he could maintain his bodyweight on a couple of eggs and a steak a day.
I am steping back on stage May 2012, first time in 14 years, following Vince’s teachings will alowe me to be in the best shape of my life. My advice to a friend: Work hard, work smater, step out of the comefort zone, experiance results.
These emails from mike and elliot have helped me alot. You find so many different opinions on all this and theres always seems straight to the point no bs. Applying vinces techniques that ive read in the free emails deffinetly will help anyone, between training and diet info!
In May 2012, I will step back on stage, first time in 14 years, following Vince’s advise, it will be in the best shape of my live. Advise to a friend: Train hard, train smarter, listen to Vince.
You have proven again that the old style of bodybuilding is still superior to all these new methods that have evolved over the years. Even the body building contests themselves are getting back to the original contests based on natural-non drug enhanced physiques and the judging is based on a more natural eye appealing look over the drug induced muscular physiques.
I’m 49 years old and started with weight lifting during the Rachel McLish era. I enjoyed watching and following the programs and during that era is when I gained most of my muscle over the years. Then came all the new rep ranges-workouts on boscu balls etc how can you concentrate and lift heavy weights when you’re trying to stabilize yourself. Sure it works for the core but it has no effect on form or your ability to lift heavier and therefore make a difference muscle wise.
So it seems that I have reached my generic muscle limit (I am a female) or have I? I’m wondering if getting back to the basics again rather than trying all these new methods will be just what I need to activate my muscle growth. I have again incorprated the 8X8 after reading your first post. I could definately feel it in my muscles the next day.
Take home message to someone just starting out or getting back into it – stick to the basics, perfect your form and definately follow the path of those that have practised what they preach as they are the true icons of this industry.
Please enter me. Vince was way ahead of his time and ours as wwell.
I have always been a firm believer in “less is more” when it come to training and relying on technique over raw strength and over working the muscle. The old tried and true methods were the beginning of bodybuilding as we know it today and Vince was a Pioneer of his time and still a force in ours today. Anyone that wants to gain muscle and lose body fat will learn technique and bdoy mechanics with Vince’s methods. Too many newbies rely on supplements and the newest highly advertised product being offered along with routines by pro bodybuilders who are on so much steroids and growth hormone, thinking they are going to make gains like the pros that are way above their level. NOT!!!
Get back to basics and rely on pure preservative free foods and natural vitamins and old school supplements that have been around since the beginning! Vince is the father od bodybuilding and his methods will always work and ANYONE that is smart enough to give them a try will have an epiphany and life changing experience that will stay with them the rest of their lives. BE LIKE VINCE!!!
Thank you for sharing all the great things that you learned from Vince Gironda.
1.) I understand that Vince Gironda “was ahead of his time”, and that what he presented was absolutely listening to. By learning more of his methods and techniques; I certainly will be able to maximize mi chances of finally getting the physique that I have always dreamed about.
2.) I would definetely say that my friends could learn from Vince G. also. I would say that eventhough this great trainer has passed away, his “legacy” will stay on for a long time, because one understand that he kew what training is, and how to get the best results possible.
1. This training would benefit my life because it will give me the best physique you can get naturally and show me how to properly train your muscles .
2. If I were to tell to tell a friend an\bout Vince Gironda I would tell them the truth. He is the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be. SO if you want to be in the best shape of your life you cant find anyone better to guide you towards the right path.
Love the passion for truth and knowledge that comes through in these articles, from both yourself and Vince. Awesome read 🙂
I think my own training would benefit massively from reading Vince’s methods thoroughly, as I have always seen such mixed results from all the so called “best” routine and BS written today! My life as a whole would possibly change completely for the better too as I would be able to pass on that knowledge to my faithful PT clients, therefore benefiting many many more people in the process!
The most interesting thing about Vince and his teachings that I would pass on to others would be the need to think for yourself……….there is a lot of cr*p written and then followed by the masses. I would love to be able to spread the word that steroids and over marketed supplements will hinder, not help, your physical and financial well being!
Cheers Mike!
I just started hitting the gym at age 43. I have always been slightly chunky; but, over that last few months i have gained 30lbs. The gym is located at my work and is run stricky by women. Their main classes and body of knowledge is zumba and cardio exercisers. For the last three weeks I have been lifting weights with zero direction. I just love the articles that you have posted about Vince Gironda last week. Now I have direction, goals, and a thirst for more. He now has become my guru. This weekend the last bit of garbage food is my house was given away or eaten. On Friday I printed your articles out for the only other two guys in the gym. They FREAKED. I would love to win Vince’s book because knowledge is definitely power. It could also greatly help my two new gym mates who were stuck doing Zumba. LOL. And most importantly I want to spread the word of Vince. His voice needs to drown out the B.S.
1) As a relatively young guy (24), I am sometimes overwhelmed with all of the new training and diet/ supplement advice that is out there from all these “experts”. From what I’ve read about Vince and his stuff so far, it seems like exactly what I need and am looking for. To become successful with anything you have to do the opposite of what the majority do. I am extremely dedicated to my current program and diet, so I can’t even imagine what would happen if I was fully dedicated with Vince’s knowledge. I start every day off with a workout, and it gets me ready to tackle every obstacle the day throws at me. I am very well-read about what today’s fitness gurus preach, but I need to learn more from Vince. Proper training and dieting are the foundation of my life and have enriched all aspects of it, so learning from Vince would improve my entire life.
2) I currently write up all kinds of training and nutrition plans for family and friends (all free of charge even though they take hours each), because I want people’s lives to be changed for the best as mine was. They see how passionate I am about helping them, and I want to give them the best advice possible. I would tell them about Vince’s no B.S., going against the grain approach, and all the benefits of it. I think that sharing Vince’s story and knowledge is the best way to keep his spirit and memory alive, especially because he doesn’t have the mainstream popularity that he deserves.
May 2012, back on stage, first time in 14 years, using Vince training I will be in my best shape ever, to my friends, drop the bs, train hart, train smart, listen to Vince
I have read about Vince for years. I used to read his advice column in the bodybuilding mags in the early 1990s. He always spoke his mind and many times his advice contradicted the popular beliefs of the time. It seemed that the people who followed his advice got results, especially when cutting up.
I think that anyone that would follow his principles and program will get results. If it worked in the 1960’s and 1970’s it will work today. I would love to read about his entire program rather than going off the piecemeal info I have followed….
Love to learn more about weight training and every little bit helps to encourage me to work out. I’d like to learn more b/c at midage it appears more difficult to motivate thyself to overcome the plateau. I need the encouragement outlined in this book and from Vince to achieve this. Help me challenge and overcome that plateau please. Thank you
What a great article, I respect the old time bodybuilders who made it possile to help the newcomers to keep up the tradition. I am also a fan of Eugen Sandow who like the others paved the way for youger bodybuilders to carry on the tradition. I am very proud to be a small part to hopefully teach the youger generations to be proud and take and carry it on.
I am presently using his 8 sets routine. Invigorating and challenging. Already spoke to a gym friend and showed him a little.Told him it only takes me 1/2 hour to get same workout as my regular 1-1 1/2 hr. ones. Not anything “new” but is following same principles better trainers use nowadays.
1) Ten days ago, I had never heard of Vince Gironda. However, since my first “8 sets of 8” e-mail from Mike, I can’t seem to soak up enough information! Up until recently, I was like most guys (and girls) you’d find in the gym, apathetically going through the motions, with no real understanding, too little intensity, resting too much, and wasting time. Worse, I was neglecting my diet and eating crap. Now, I question everything I put into my body and every routine and rep. In my research, though, I discovered there are more opinions floating out there than there are self-serving ads in a fitness magazine. I believe fundamentally that the human body, out of the womb, is a predictable machine that wants to function as efficiently as possible and be the best it can be … “naturally”. Just based on what little I’ve read, I believe I can optimize my training and health by following Vince’s natural methods. Everything Vince taught makes logical sense, and he backs it up with his mastery of kinesiology. If I pointed to a random muscle, how many personal trainers today could tell me how it functions and how to make it maximally grow? By following both Vince’s training methods and nutrition standards, I know I will get leaner and build more muscle, at a faster rate, with less time wasted, and feel better, than the next guy who is flying blind, even if he subscribes to a dozen magazines.
2) While the term “old school” comes up a lot when reading about Vince, his tried and true methods were revolutionary at the time, and, as counterintuitive as it sounds, even today are revolutionary, compared to all the “flavor of the month” misinformation being disseminated.

1) How do you think your training would benefit and your life would improve if you were to learn more about Vince’s methods and techniques?
My training and life would benefit greatly from Vince’s methods and techniques. I have already improved with the few articles you have emailed. I just did a complete week of Vince’s 8 sets of 8. This is the best week of training I have ever had! I actually feel just my muscle working and not my joints as well. I have more energy from the workouts and dying to get in the gym the next day. I not only want to learn more but I need to learn more. So many years wasted on other programs.
2) If you were to tell a friend about how Vince Gironda could help them and what you find interesting about him, what would you say?
What I would tell a friend about Vince is he really is the best trainer alive, his resume of client champions speaks for it self. Also Vince was a head of his time with is training and methods, with the proof of today’s studies he is proven right every time. Vince methods will stand the test of time.
I believe my training would benefit in a very important and significant way, by training SMART. After suffering a severe shoulder injury playing college football, I have a new found appreciation for the approach of training smarter. I believe my life would improve tremendously through my goal to learn, apply, and embody Vince’s principles of nutrition, training, and overall wellness. If I were to tell a friend why Vince and his principles stand above the rest and would benefit them it would be because Vince embodied his philosophy. He breathed it, he ate it, he slept it. He LIVED it. To paraphrase what was stated in the article, “Vince was in the right place, but clearly in the wrong time period.” Vince’s philosophy was years ahead of his time, his knowledge was under-appreciated and undervalued. I am over joyed to see a philosophy that is honest and straightforward, while being centered around a focus on nutrition and positively geared toward a healthy mental attitude and overall well-being, all of which I implement into my life daily and will continue to do so throughout my years.
WOW!!!!! Truly an inspiring tribute.
For question #1 I think by learning more I would improve the quality of my workouts and nutrition. I have always believed that all natural is the best way to go if you are trying to lose fat, as I am, or gain lean muscle as my husband is trying to do. We both have had some success, but this could give us the extra education and support we need to get to our ultimate goal.
For question 2, I would tell them he stuck to his beliefs with so many other were doing the complete opposite and he proved his methods worked!!!!
Hi Mike
Thank you so much for enlightening us all. This information is so useful, I suspect it has been suppressed by the supplement companies for years and years.
I have already included most of Vince’s exercises into my workout routines.
Vince Gironda was a genius.
Thank you
David Meikle
My father adopted Vince’s methods and so have I.
At 50 years of age, I’m stronger, pound for pound, than I have ever been and don’t look too shabby. The young bucks refer to me at the gym as they can’t believe their eyes.
There’s something to say about “old school” training – they had a beautiful physique without developing the behemoth physiques you see today because of drug use.
Sustainability is the key and this can only occur through training, resting and a good diet. You, and those around you, will all benefit.
I’m passing my knowledge to my 9 & 4 year old children as their father is testament to what the human body can achieve with the right ingredients.
My answer to the both questions are related.
From what I’ve learned about Vince G, we have a lot in common concerning our thought processes. I like that he approached things from a logical point of view, looked at the research, read the literature, and did what worked, no matter what other people might say about him or it. That’s pretty much what I call integrity. His rules seem simple enough to follow, although I need to learn more about a few of them, like the concept of ‘shocking’ the solar plexus and limiting growth by reducing or altering hormone response. I feel, if Vince were here, he might be able to explain it to me. In lieu of that, I’ll research it. I’m in my mid-60’s and it’s been quite a while since I’ve been in top shape. However, I too, both philosophically and by profession, believe in avoiding drugs, if at all possible. I think they end up creating more problems than they purportedly solve. I also believe (like Vince did) that good, foundational, natural nutrition is more than half the battle. My motivation is not to enter and win a body building contest, but, rather, to have long life and good health and to model those good things for my patients. If this works for me, I feel I can easily tell others what Vince has to offer and show it to them first hand. My motivation, probably like Vince’s, was to see how many other lives I can touch in a profoundly beneficial way.

My life would totally change since I’ve been working out 3 times a day but it would be of great help such a book. Not only would it educate me on the right path of working out but help me physically and nutritionally since I come from a family who hearth problems, high blood pressure and diabetes is comen. The best way to fight against does odds is being healthy and having the right knowledge to accomplish ones goals. To he/she I would say Vince is not only a inspiration but a legend who was able to revolutionize bodybuilding and it’s way of life. A real hero and someone who new what he was doing in the iron game
1. I believe I could benefit and my life would be different because I am relatively new to the strength game. Most of my workout experience came from coaches in high-school. I am 43 now and have been seriously active in resistance training for 5 years now and have just recently discover Vince and the legacy he has left behind. I am solely taking your recommendation on reading about him, as until recently had never heard of him. Mike I respect your opinion and know you wouldn’t steer my wrong.
2. Now as for what I would say to a friend about Vince would go something like this. I’ve been hearing a lot about this guy Vincent Miranda. He is called the guru and probably knows what he OS talking about, considering he has trained the likes of Arnold and countless others. He created the 8×8 sequence and it OS considered to be the staple set and rep count for hypertrophy. He is a misunderstood phenomenon of strength and wisdom and his methods though unconventional are very effective from what I understand. You should really give this book a read as I am and after you are finished we can test his methods. I for one think we can benefit from his methods.
As a bodybuilder, I’m always learning how to create a perfect body, a tough task considering the amount of garbage on the subject nowadays. Many supplement companies and experts from all kinds of fields are always advertising how their new and improved, quick and easy method is the solution for healthy living. They have yet to find one that actually works.
Working hard and working smart are the keys to success. Vince knew this and lived by this. He was a constant innovator who took what worked, refined what worked, and threw away the rest. Learning from a man like him would not only help me build the physique of my dreams, it would teach me how to succeed in all other areas of life.
Vince was an individual who stood by his beliefs even when people were constantly criticizing his methods. He discovered what worked, did what worked, taught what worked, worked hard, and never let other people’s opinions change what he knew was right. Vince wasn’t a perfect man, but he was a bodybuilding genius. Bodybuilder or not, everybody has something to learn from this man, something I would gladly share with any person willing to learn.
Answer to the first question is that the. New direction my life would go is an improvement. Im a powerlifter and I love powerlifting, I do feel that muscle size and top performance health will take me past old records into new ones.
I believe any improvement in athletics caries over into all areas of life. You can’t bullshit results with iron or real timeless Greek god looks.
My friends if you look at me later that would be an advertisement.
I have tried and tested a few of Vince’s techniques and can feel that they are right. I admire and respect the fact that he never pandered to his clients or the mainstream fitness industry. We could all benefit from having someone with his wisdom and experience tell us what we need to hear, rather than what we want to hear.
Like many others I wade through the sea of information out there and try to sort the wheat from the chaff. That in itself is may be the main reason why my results are not what I would like. I’ve been weighed down with choices and eager to try new things when maybe I should look to old things with proven value. At 44, building the body I want is going to require smart choices, sweat and patience. I can provide the latter and believe Vince would a very smart choice to provide the former.
In spreading the word about Vince I would point to his successes, his conviction and his longevity. While the mags have their hooks into many a young mind with the promise of freakish size, I would rather have a life. Working out will always play a part in that life but rather than just looking for a quick fix I want to have strength, endurance, energy and a physique I can be proud of well past the grandpa stage.
Running against the tide is more fun than following the herd anyway. Think how satisfying it will be when the gym rats who huddle round the Smith Machine rolling their eyes and mocking your “old school” efforts, see you attain what they can only dream of. Vince Gironda dared to be different, so why can’t we?
Congratulations You’re A Winner!

I’ve always been an athlete, and that has been my primary fitness paradigm. Training through sports and athletic fitness. I’m pretty new to body building and the gym in general to be honest. I’ve been reading like crazy and changing my workouts, trying new supplements, and tweaking my diet. Over the last year, I’ve had some frustrations and some successes. I’ve also discovered there is a lot of bull in the fitness industry and haven’t really found a great place for the bare essentials that just plain old work. However, after reading the last couple of articles on Vince here at CriticalBench, I know I want to learn more. I really found myself wishing I could have gone back in time just to be able to walk into his gym and introduce myself and say teach away. That’s why I want a copy of Vince’s book. I want to learn a method that just works. I want to see the success without the hype. I want to walk in the gym and have the confidence what I’m doing is awesome and will work. No gimmics just personal glory. Win or no win, I’m buying a copy if I have too.
If I could share Vince (the little that I know) with the guys I work with, I think that it would change them a lot. For one, their diets would shape up. They would stop chasing after all the latest supplements too. I think that one guy would stop basing his new monthly workout “aha” on the next issue of Muscles Mayhem Magazine (if there is such a thing) too. The idea that Vince has done this for me already is pretty big in my life, and I definitely believe that it will work for others. Personally, Vince always was after the natural way like your article says. That’s how I want to live, eat, and workout. Thanks for the articles you’ve written on him btw.
Another Winner!

How do you think your training would benefit and your life would improve if you were to learn more about Vince’s methods and techniques?
From reading Vinces articles on your website I think his techniques would be the best for me as I train drug free…I would bet that 95% of the articles in modern magazines use models that are on “the sauce”,,,I have heard crazy stories of some “natural” bodybuilders today…urine transplants etc..Vince had a better physic than most “natural” guys these days and was drug free! I do believe he was possibley even more than 50 years ahead of his time…that tells me his program worked and would work for me and my friends…
If you were to tell a friend about how Vince Gironda could help them and what you find interesting about him, what would you say?
I will tell my friends the same as mentioned above…that he trained drug free and achieved a great and well balanced body…and since he was drug free and utilized a basicaly simple and healthy food regime…somthing that anybody can follow…everybody that takes his routine to heart will be a) much healthier and b) have a body they will be proud of!
The article has inspired me greatly. I have always believed the old school of body building when too many supplements were not available & training techniques were solid. This will really help me to actually build some core muscle rather than getting confused with too much information & contrary views of various trainers on exercises & nutrition.
Dear Mr Mike Westerdal,
At the age of 51, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes a year ago, and since then i’ve been on medications for diabetes, hypertension, and hypecholesterolemia. Apart from all these medications, i’ve also started exercising to improve my overall physical buildup. Being a General Surgeon, i am very much aware of the complications of my present health condition. I believe that building muscles and being physically fit would definitely help me control my diabetes, hypertension, and blood cholesterol level. I’ve been trying to follow some programs, but i feel i don’t gain the expected results i should be getting. Having read your article about Vince, I find his methods unorthodox, but make sense. Perhaps, his methods will be the one i’ve been looking for to truly get the results i am wanting all these times. I do hope Vince’s prescription for a shredded body will give me the necessary shape i want.
I would tell my friend to look into your article and see for themselves the logic there is in Vince Geronda’s methods of body building. I have a lot of guys spending hours and hours of exercise in the gym, and yet do not appear to have progressed tremendously from how they look when they started working out. I’m sure trying new techniques will give us all the results we want for a firm and shredded body. Thank you
1. Having followed your pieces about Vince I started using the 7 exercises and the 8×8 – surprise, surprise they are beginning to have a very good effect – power has increased as has muscles size. Am looking forward to reading more in the book!!
2. If you want a down-to-earth, no B.S. pattern of working which has withstood the passage of time and has ignored the “fashionable” methods/programs which have blown in and out in the meantime [because they haven’t measured up to their own hype!!] then the Gironda method is one you have to have a go with.
Want to build a physique like yesteryear bodybuilders like grimek, larry scott, vince himself, frank zane. Got tired with the current stage of bodybuilders fat bellies, GH guts. Would be happy if I get a copy of the book.
This is refreshing information. Look forward to reading the book.
I m a diabetic from 1 year. And my age is 27. I use to do daily 2 hours of excercise. But after receiving vince articles from you my training results have increased tremendously and even muscle rippness and size via Vince 8*8 method. Thanks a ton for these articles. And his take on Liver tablets,Eggs Vitamin B is greatly benificial to me as i cannot take much of supplements, the natural way advocated by Vince has helped me in great way in increasing my Size. The best part which i ll tell to my friends is his way oftraining and doing it without steroids.
I am happy to be a winner
wow’ that will be very awesome to me as a beginner lifter, by the methods and technique of vince’s that put the hollywood actor arnold a rock hardcore body, i think my training will be more complex and regarded more technique and skill that will create a thin skiny into a lean muscles body, and hope that my life would be more fantastic than ever i had, and the next day with the new hardcore muscles that will shock everyone around, and lastly that will help me more benefit and more enjoyable to life.
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
A round of applause for your post.Much thanks again. Will read on…
i’m 57 and looking forward to reading more of vince’s writings.he seemed to know more about bodybuilding than any of his counterparts.
A great an lovely inspiring article well done keep it up! Will try to implement vince concept in my training routine. Mohammed South Africa
